Traffic but no sales? Eight leak points where your store loses the buyer

When a store owner sees weak sales, the first instinct is to increase ad spend. But if your store already receives traffic and doesn't sell, doubling the ads means doubling the number of people who enter and leave without buying — doubling the loss, not the profit.

In most cases the real problem is not visitor count, but leak points inside the purchase journey itself. Here are the eight most common ones in Saudi online stores.

1. A single or poor-quality product photo

An online buyer cannot touch the product, so the photo is its only substitute. One image with a cluttered background or bad lighting creates doubt — and doubt means closing the tab. The minimum: three to five photos from different angles, and at least one showing the product in use or beside something that conveys its real size.

2. A description that lists benefits but answers no questions

"High quality and elegant design" means nothing. The buyer is asking: what are the dimensions in centimetres? What material? Does it need assembly? What weight does it hold? Is there a warranty? Every unanswered question is a direct cause of hesitation — and most hesitant buyers don't return.

3. Shipping cost revealed at the last step

This is the single biggest cause of cart abandonment worldwide and in Saudi Arabia. Someone who adds a 120-riyal item then discovers 45 riyals of shipping at checkout feels deceived, and leaves. Show shipping cost — or the free-shipping threshold — on the product page itself.

4. Forcing account creation

Requiring registration before purchase loses you an entire segment of first-time buyers. Always offer guest checkout; you can invite them to create an account after the order is complete, once they have already given you their money.

5. Not enough payment methods

In the Saudi market, the absence of Mada or Apple Pay means losing a meaningful share of buyers outright. Some segments only buy with cash on delivery. Every missing payment method is a customer segment fully closed off.

6. A store that is slow on mobile

Most store traffic in Saudi Arabia arrives on mobile. A page taking more than three seconds loses a large share of visitors before they see the product. The most common cause: huge images uploaded straight from a camera without compression.

7. No abandoned-cart reminder

Someone who added an item and didn't finish is your closest customer — they stated clear buying intent and stopped for some reason. A single automated reminder a few hours later recovers a meaningful share of these orders. It is the cheapest sales source any store owns, and most ignore it.

8. No trust signals at all

No reviews, no clear return policy, no visible contact number, no verified commercial registration. A buyer who doesn't know you is looking for one signal of reassurance before entering a card. With none of them present, hesitation is the natural response.

How to find which point is yours

Don't guess. Connect Google Analytics and open the purchase funnel report: how many viewed the product, how many added to cart, how many began checkout, how many completed. The largest gap between two consecutive numbers is the leak to fix first.

If the gap is between "product view" and "add to cart", the problem is photos, description or price. If it is between "began checkout" and "order complete", the problem is shipping, payment methods or form length. One correct diagnosis saves you months of random tweaks.

The right order of fixes

Start with the cheapest and fastest-acting: show shipping cost early, enable guest checkout, switch on abandoned-cart reminders, compress your images. Four steps that take days to implement and genuinely move the rate — before you consider one extra riyal on advertising.
