Google Ads: why your budget burns without sales — 9 costly mistakes
You spend on Google Ads every month, the report shows clicks climbing — but your phone isn't ringing proportionally. This is rarely bad luck. In most cases the budget is genuinely being spent, just on the wrong people, at the wrong moment, or towards a page that doesn't keep the promise.
Mistake 1: No negative keywords
This is the single biggest budget drain in the Saudi market. Advertise "AC maintenance" and your ad also shows for "free AC maintenance", "AC maintenance jobs", and "how to service your AC yourself". Each one clicks, you pay, none of them buys.
The negative list is half the craft. Words like "free", "jobs", "learn", "tutorial", "PDF", "used" — each saves you wasted clicks every single day.
Mistake 2: The landing page is your homepage
An excellent campaign is wasted entirely when it lands on the homepage. Someone who clicked "split AC installation" wants a page about split AC installation — not a page introducing your company history while leaving them to hunt for the service they came for.
Mistake 3: No conversion tracking at all
If your report shows clicks and impressions only, you are flying blind. Without measuring calls, form submissions and WhatsApp requests, nobody can know which keyword brought a customer and which burned money.
Mistake 4: Geographic targeting too broad
A workshop in east Riyadh advertising across the whole Kingdom pays for clicks from Jeddah and Dammam — from people who will never drive 900 kilometres to reach it.
Mistake 5: Mixing buying intent with learning intent
"How do I build a website" and "website design company" are entirely different searches. The first deserves an article, not an ad. Bidding on it is near-guaranteed spend with no return.
Mistake 6: Running 24/7 without thinking
If nobody answers after 9pm, your ad running at 2am buys you a missed call. Review the hourly report and pause or lower bids when you cannot answer.
Mistake 7: Ad copy that names neither price nor differentiator
"Best marketing company — excellent service" separates you from nobody. "Salla store built in 10 days — no monthly fees" filters the audience before the click: fewer clicks, higher conversion rate.
Mistake 8: Not using extensions
Sitelinks, phone numbers, service prices, location — extensions are free, expand your ad's screen space and lift click-through without raising cost. Leaving them empty is free money forfeited.
Mistake 9: Never opening the search terms report
This report shows the actual words people typed to reach your ad — not the words you chose. Opening it weekly is the fastest way to spot waste. Most struggling accounts have never opened it once.
The condition we state before any campaign
Ads multiply what exists; they do not create it from nothing. If the landing page is slow, the phone goes unanswered, or the offer is unclear, the budget will be spent with no result however skilled the campaign. So we review the page and intake path before the first riyal runs.
What your monthly report must contain
- Cost per lead — not cost per click alone.
- Calls and form submissions actually generated by the campaign.
- Which keywords converted, and which were paused and why.
- Return on ad spend (ROAS) if you run an online store.
If your report doesn't answer "how much did I spend and how many customers came from it", it is not a report — it is a slideshow.
